While the Philadelphia Flyers disappointingly fell short of the playoffs last season, it was a year of growth and progress for several key cogs of the franchise in year three of Ron Hextall’s methodical rebuild of the franchise.
In his second draft as GM, Hextall traded up to select talented center Travis Konecny with the 24th overall pick. Konecny impressed in juniors again after being selected and performed strong enough to work his way onto the Flyers’ roster out of training camp last year.
The 20-year-old had 11 goals and 17 assists in 70 games last season and is now primed to take a nice step forward with one year of experience under his belt. However, it’s always nice to look back and reflect upon the season that was.
Konecny sat down and talked about his first career goal with all of the charisma and flair that you’d expect, pointing out that he got teased for his weak celebration afterwards.
Konecny’s first goal was also featured as moment 92 on Sportsnet’s top 100 moments of the 2016-17 NHL season.
It was a sweet moment, for sure; one that sparked a comeback from down three goals in a game that ended in a 4-3 shootout victory for the Flyers.
