Hungry dogs run faster.
The Philadelphia Flyers will begin their first-round playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. They battled their way back from a 10-game losing streak early in December to become one of the best teams in the second half of the season. Now, they are ready for more in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Flyers may be ready for more, but not many people are giving them the respect that they deserve. In fact, very few are.
Across five major news outlets, only one person out of 37 picked the Flyers to win their first-round series. 97% of them (36 of 37) picked the Penguins. Mike G. Morreale, a staff writer at NHL.com, was the only one to pick the Flyers.
The other 13 members of the NHL.com panel, all 13 members on ESPN’s panel, all four members of USA Today’s panel, all three members of Sporting News’ panel, and all three members of CBS Sports’ panel selected the Penguins.
The Penguins are the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions and are favorites in the series, but the Flyers deserve more respect than just one out of 37.
It’s nothing new for the Flyers, however, as we’ve seen Claude Giroux get overlooked in the Hart Trophy discussion despite the deserving case that he has.
It’s also nothing new for the city of Philadelphia. The Eagles won the Super Bowl after rallying around their status as underdogs, and the Flyers are looking to follow in their footsteps.
The series starts tonight at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
