The injury bug continues to hit the Philadelphia Flyers. On Friday night, Travis Sanheim was recalled under emergency conditions from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, meaning that there were likely two defensemen injured heading into their game against the Jets on Saturday.
Ron Hextall announced on Saturday morning that defensemen Robert Hagg and Johnny Oduya are out with lower-body injuries. Hagg will miss two weeks and Oduya is considered day-to-day.
Hagg leads all NHL players with 232 hits, while leading all rookies in blocked shots (99). Hagg also ranks fourth among all rookie defensemen in average time-on-ice per game at 18:14. Oduya was acquired via waivers at the Trade Deadline after Mark Alt was claimed by the Colorado Avalanche.
Here’s what the Flyers pairings could look like on Saturday afternoon against the Jets.
Ivan Provorov – Shayne Gostisbehere
Brandon Manning – Radko Gudas
Sanheim had been playing extremely well for the Phantoms before being recalled Friday night and will likely slot next to Andrew MacDonald or Radko Gudas, who he’s played with earlier in the season. At one point, Sanheim and Gudas was one of the team’s better pairings despite limited ice time. We’ll see what happens on Saturday. Head coach Dave Hakstol told the media that Sanheim would be important for the Flyers down the stretch prior to being sent down saying that he will, “play important minutes for us in the second half of the season.” It’ll be interesting to see how loose the leash is on Sanheim in his first game back.
Puck drop is set for 1 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center.
