Earlier this week, the MLB and its teams revealed the players’ nicknames that will be worn on jerseys during Players Weekend at the end of August. It’s a fun weekend that will showcase the personality of some of the players around the league.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like a very NHL-like thing to do, so we took matters into our own hands.
If the NHL were to do such a thing, what would the Flyers’ players be wearing on the back of their jerseys? We went through the roster and took a stab at each players’ selection for an NHL Players Weekend.
Radko Gudas – The Butcher
Gudas launched his own “The Butcher” line of shirts last summer, and it’s a fitting nickname for the hard-hitting, axe-swinging defenseman.
Ivan Provorov – Provy
Simple yet effective, just like Ivan.
Travis Konecny – TK
Teeks, Konection, and a few other nicknames are out there for the Flyers’ young gun, but TK is short and sweet.
Michael Raffl – Rafflcopter
Raf isn’t creative enough, and while “Waffles” was a close second, we had to go with Rafflcopter for the Austrian wonder.
Sean Couturier – Coots
This one, like others on the roster, is pretty self explanatory. Couturier isn’t exactly the easiest name to spell, which results in many calling him by his nickname; whether it be Coots, Couts, or Cooter.
Wayne Simmonds – Wayne Train
Choo Choo! Get off the tracks when the Wayne Train is headed your way.
Nolan Patrick – The Franchise.
Scott Laughton – Laughts.
Your typical hockey nickname.
Dale Weise – Mr. Incredible
The resemblance is uncanny.
Brandon Manning – Mandog
Manning gives his all on every shift and rocks Mandog on his equipment. He would definitely wear it on the back of his jersey.
Matt Read – Dad
Dad Read brings the best jokes while wearing his khakis and Hawaiian shirts.
Claude Giroux – Captain Claude
Claude Giroux is the captain on and off the ice for the Flyers. The team even gave out Captain Claude capes to kids a few years ago.
Michal Neuvirth – Neuvy
Neuvy is a simple man.
Brian Elliott – Moose
Elliott honors a childhood family friend with a Moose on his mask.
Jori Lehtera – Lehts
Jori Lehtera has yet to dawn the orange and black and give fans much to work off of, so the typical hockey nickname of shortening the last name and adding “s” or “y” to it fits perfectly here.
Jordan Weal – Wheels
You can’t resist the pun.
Andrew MacDonald – Human Anchor
Sorry, not sorry.
Sam Morin – The Next Pronger
Sam Morin has been labeled as “The Next Pronger™” since the Flyers drafted him in 2013.
Valtteri Filppula – Filpadelphia
Just flip around the letters in “Flipadelphia”, made famous by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and it’s a nickname made easy.
Shayne Gostisbehere – Ghost Bear
It’s almost like he wouldn’t even be changing his jersey.
Mike Vecchione – Vech
It’s a stretch, just go with it.
Jake Voracek – Scoracek
Voracek? More like Scoracek!
Oskar Lindblom – Lindbloom
The Swedish kid will be Lindblooming onto the scene this season.
And here they are all together.
Which are your favorites?
