The Lehigh Valley Phantoms have signed forward Colin McDonald and defenseman David Drake to AHL contracts. McDonald has been the Phantoms’ captain for three seasons and has become a key part of their team on and off of the ice. Drake made his professional debut last season after finishing his collegiate career at the University of Connecticut.
McDonald had 25 points (8 goals, 17 assists) in 56 games last season with the Phantoms. He has 101 points (47 goals, 54 assists) in 179 career games with the Phantoms. He has played in eight games with the Flyers as well. He had one goal in five games in 2015-16, and one goal in three games in 2016-17.
McDonald has settled in nicely to his role as the Phantoms’ captain. He was on the cusp of the NHL roster a few years ago, and still could be a viable short-term fill-in on the fourth line, but he’s become a leader on and off the ice for the Phantoms.
The Flyers selected David Drake in the seventh round (192nd overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. The defenseman had two assists in seven games toward the end of the 2017-18 season.
Drake was an alternate captain in his junior and senior seasons at UConn. He played in 124 games in his four-year college career, compiling 25 points (4 goals, 21 assists).
