This is becoming a trend.
Lehigh Valley Phantoms forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel has been one of the team’s best players this season, but he has been playing on the edge. While Aube-Kubel has some offensive flair and potential to become an NHL player, his discipline gets away from him sometimes.
Aube-Kubel was suspended twice in just over a two-week span in March of this year, and he has received another suspension in the playoffs. He has been suspended three games, Games 3, 4, and 5 of the Atlantic Division Finals, as a consequence of an illegal check to the head in Saturday night’s Game 2 loss.
He was suspended on March 4th for this hit.
And then again on March 19th for this hit.
He is now being suspended for an illegal check to the head once again. He was called for a two-minute minor on the play, and is receiving supplemental discipline as well.
Here’s a live look at the hit.
Aube-Kubel lined up defenseman Josiah Didier and launched upwards.
The replays show just how scary the hit was.
Didier passed the puck, looked up ice, and got hit up high by Aube-Kubel.
Didier did not return to the game and might have a concussion as a result of the hit.
This is becoming a disturbing trend for Aube-Kubel. He has the skill necessary to not have to play dirty, but three suspensions in just over two months is worrisome.
Since March 3rd, Aube-Kubel has played in 19 games, and he will miss seven total games as a result of the suspensions.
