What a win!
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms stormed back from a 5-1 deficit after the first period to end up winning the game by a final score of 7-6.
The Phantoms scored midway through the first period to tie the game at one, but the Bears scored four in the final eight minutes of the period to take a commanding 5-1 lead. There were 20 minutes gone, but the Phantoms had plenty of hope left.
Philippe Myers followed it up less than two minutes later with a goal. He made a fantastic Gostisbeheresque move at the blue line to give himself some room to streak down the boards for a shot, and a goal!
The Bears and Phantoms traded a goal each after that, with Riley Barber scoring off a breakaway and Cole Bardreau scoring off a bounce off the end boards.
Aube-Kubel and Martel then connected again, in a less conventional fashion this time.
Aube-Kubel made a move around a man and sent the puck in front, where it bounced off a downed Martel and into the net.
It doesn’t look great, but it counts.
The Phantoms entered the third period down by a goal, 6-5.
Mike Vecchione scored a power-play goal off of a fortuitous bounce to tie the game at six early in the period, then Aube-Kubel went back to work.
Aube-Kubel shrugged off a man in the neutral zone, then dished the puck off and drove to the net. He found the rebound and put it past the netminder for the Phantoms’ first lead of the game!
What a play by Aube-Kubel!
He was loving it.
That would be enough for the Phantoms, who erased a four-goal deficit to win for just the third time in franchise history.
Aube-Kubel was named the first star of the game thanks to his two goals and one assist. Martel had three points as well, a goal and two assists, to earn second star honors.
Aube-Kubel reached the 40-point mark on the season tonight. He has improved immensely this season and should be on the Flyers’ radar for a roster spot next season.
The Phantoms remain in first place and have 79 points in 58 games (0.681 point percentage) after last night’s win. The Penguins and Bruins each trail the Phantoms by eight points.
