The Philadelphia Flyers might be shaking things up on defense. After Tuesday night’s loss, defenseman Mark Alt was carrying his sticks and equipment as his locker was being cleared out. It could be a sign that he’s headed back down to Lehigh Valley, as the Phantoms play in Wilkes-Barre tonight.
Alt has been a solid stop-gap on the blue line, but he’s nothing more than that. He could be a seventh defenseman for the Flye
That will leave a hole in the Flyers lineup with Andrew MacDonald out until at least Friday, and Radko Gudas suspended until mid-December. That hole could be filled by Sam Morin.
“At the end of the day, it’s just adversity,” he said regarding his chance at almost playing with the Flyers. “My dream is to play in the NHL and if I play the way I was at the beginning of the season [with the Phantoms], I know I’m going to get another shot.”
Now he might have that shot. Morin would be a much-welcomed addition to a blue line that needs some size and a physical presence with MacDonald and Gudas out of the lineup. If Mark Alt is indeed headed to the Phantoms, we could be getting another Phantoms defenseman in his place, only this one has a much higher pedigree and ceiling.
The Flyers suffered their fifth-straight loss on Tuesday night in rather embarrassing fashion. With a home-and-home against the New York Islanders coming up, Morin could offer a boost. We’ll have to wait and see what happens later today.
