That was ugly.
The Philadelphia Flyers were set for their home opener and looking to make a statement after splitting their opening road trip.
Gritty came in like a wrecking ball in a dramatic entrance prior to puck drop, but once the game started, things went downhill for the Flyers. And they kept going downhill.
“It got going downhill and we couldn’t stop it,” Wayne Simmonds said after the loss.
Simmonds scored a power-play goal late in the third period, but it didn’t even come close to mattering. In fact, the players on the ice simply skated back to the bench without celebrating. That’s when you know it’s bad.
“It wasn’t a good game,” Simmonds stated plainly. “It was embarrassing.”
Even that was putting it lightly.
Claude Giroux and Shayne Gostisbehere had some stronger words to use on the loss.
“I just think we played like sh*t tonight,” Giroux said. “We just left our goalie to dry and Moose played a good game, he didn’t deserve that and it’s on us.”
That seemed to be a common theme in the locker room after the game. Brian Elliott gave up eight goals, but he was the best Flyers player on the ice.
“Yeah, we sucked,” Gostisbehere said. “I mean I feel so f******g bad for Moose right now. ”
The Flyers are going to need to turn the page quickly after their embarrassing home opener. They will play again tonight in Ottawa against the Senators.
The good news is that they can quickly put this behind them with a win. However, a loss to a reeling Ottawa franchise would further the embarrassment.
