What a win!
The Philadelphia Flyers went into PPG Paints Arena and stole Game 5 from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Claude Giroux, Valtteri Filppula, and Sean Couturier all scored, while Michal Neuvirth came up huge in his first start of the series.
Let’s get to it.
And we were underway in Pittsburgh!
The Flyers got the first power play of the game after Dominik Simon hit Andrew MacDonald.
They had a few chances, but nothing was going.
Then Claude Giroux gave the Penguins a power play as he hopped onto the ice and played the puck too early.
Luckily they killed it off.
Matt Murray gloved down Sean Couturier’s chance off the rush.
Then Evgeni Malkin tried to slewfoot Jori Lehtera, but ended up injuring himself.
And the Flyers struck!
Valtteri Filppula worked the puck down low.
Then Jake Voracek fed Giroux for a one-time blast!
Captain Claude’s first of the playoffs!
What a shot!
Jake and G are on the scoresheet!
The Flyers led 1-0 after one period of play.
Nolan Patrick generated a great scoring chance early in the period, but Michael Raffl couldn’t handle the bouncing puck.
Evgeni Malkin continued to be Evgeni Malkin, taking a bit of a dive…
…then taking a penalty to negate his team’s power play.
But then he drew a penalty coming out of the box.
The Penguins’ best chance of the night to that point came as Conor Sheary’s shot rang off the iron.
Then, after some pressure, the Penguins struck.
Bryan Rust tucked home a wraparound to tie the game at 1.
Zach Aston-Reese took an interference penalty then dropped his gloves, but somehow Andrew MacDonald got called for roughing to even it up.
Giroux was giving it to the referee.
Then Sidney Crosby dove to draw a hooking penalty.
Couturier and Simmonds are all of us.
And Jake Guentzel scored on a five-hole shot to take a 2-1 lead.
Radko Gudas went to the box for holding, giving the Penguins a chance to take a 3-1 lead late in the period.
But it was the Flyers who scored.
Filppula dropped a pass to Jori Lehtera then crashed the net.
His effort paid off with a goal!
The Flyers and Penguins were tied at 2 after two periods of play.
The Penguins got another power play after a terrible penalty call. Brian Dumoulin fell down on his own, but Filppula was called for tripping.
Luckily, the Flyers killed it off.
Speaking of lucky, Giroux was fine after being railroaded by Jamie Oleksiak. Oh yeah, there was no call.
Matt Murray came up with a big save on Raffl.
It was going back and forth in the third.
Sean Couturier stepped up and scored with just over a minute left!
His shot deflected off of a defenseman and in!
Then Michal Neuvirth absolutely robbed Sidney Crosby in the final minute.
And Matt Read put the game away!
Flyers win, 4-2!
