The Philadelphia Flyers hosted the winless Arizona Coyotes on Monday night for a quick stop at home before a two-game road trip. They came into the game a little shorthanded with injuries, but that is never an excuse.
A slow start to the game put the Flyers down 2-0, then 3-0 in the 3rd period, but they battled all the way back to earn a point. Sean Couturier and Ivan Provorov came up huge down the stretch, as did Claude Giroux in the overtime loss.
The boys were ready to go on home ice.
But they didn’t look ready. The Coyotes took an early 1-0 lead on this goal.
Then they made it 2-0.
The Flyers tried to get some things going.
Jake Voracek and Travis Sanheim sprung Claude Giroux on a rush, but nothing came of it.
Brian Elliott came up with a few big saves in close to keep it a 2-0 game.
The Flyers trailed 2-0 after one period of play, and only had three shots.
They finally got their first shot from a forward after this turnover.
Elliott stood tall to deny a one-time chance.
But Scott Wedgewood matched him.
Wayne Simmonds fed Jordan Weal for a great chance.
Mark Alt defended a 2-on-1 well and the Coyotes sent an errant pass.
Sanheim continued his solid game with another nice breakout pass.
Wayne Simmonds got called for a penalty late in the period.
He wasn’t happy.
The Coyotes made it 3-0 on the power play.
But before the goal Brandon Manning was boarded. The play carried on without a penalty.
The Flyers got a power-play goal of their own to gain some hope, though.
What a goal by Sean Couturier.
And the slick setup by Claude Giroux.
Travis Konecny was throwing the body around to keep the momentum going.
There was a scrum in front of the net after a whistle.
It looked like the Flyers were going on another power play, but the referees called high-sticking on Voracek after the fact.
The Flyers pulled Brian Elliott with over two minutes to go down by two goals.
Jordan Weal buried a rebound off Ivan Provorov’s shot to make it a one-goal game in the final minute.
Then with 14 seconds to go, #14 tied it up!
What a keep at the blue line by Provorov.
And a nice dish by Giroux.
Celly hard, boys!
The game headed to 3-on-3 overtime.
The Flyers killed off Voracek’s “penalty” in OT.
And Provorov came up huge with a few blocked shots.
In the final minute of overtime Wayne Simmonds got interfered with in the corner without a call.
Then the Coyotes won it with 14 seconds left.
Well, at least the Flyers got a point out of the game.
Sanheim made a mistake late that cost his team, but that’s how you learn.
He felt it.
The Flyers battled back in the final minute to earn a point. This team will not quit.
