It was another great game for German Rubtsov and the Russians, as they beat Belarus on Friday by a final score of 5-2.
Rubtsov got on the scoresheet with two points in an opening game loss, played well with no points on Thursday, then got rewarded for his play with two more points on Friday afternoon. The Philadelphia Flyers prospect now has four points in three games after another solid performance.
Rubtsov might not always light it up on the scoreboard, but he plays a smart, two-way style of game that translates well to any level. It is good to see him rack up the points with Russia, though.
Rubtsov got his first point of the game on his first goal of the tournament.
He weaved through the neutral zone with the puck, then entered the zone and dropped it off to a teammate. He drove the slot, got the puck back, and made a nice move before sliding the puck home.
A great give-and-go of sorts, and a nice finish by Rubtsov.
Another look at the patience from Rubtsov.
That gave Russia a 2-0 lead in the 1st period.
He got his second point of the game on an assist in the 3rd.
After winning a faceoff, he got to the front of the net and found a loose puck. He made a nifty move to backhand it on net, where it rebounded to a teammate for a goal.
A great job by Rubtsov to keep his balance and get the puck on net.
And a nice finish.
Rubtsov finished the game with a goal, assist, four shots on goal, and a +2 rating in a team-high 18:51 of ice time.
He is now tied for 3rd in the tournament with four points, and is also tied for 3rd with three assists. His +5 rating through three games has him tied for 5th best in the tournament.
It hasn’t been a great junior season for Rubtsov, but he is showing off his full skillset at the World Junior Championship.
