Philadelphia Flyers forward prospect German Rubtsov was sent back to the QMJHL this season to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens and he is off to a pretty good start individually. The Flyers could have kept Rubtsov with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL, but a full year of junior hockey after his season last year was cut short should do him a world of good.
The Sagueneens are off to a rough start, but Rubtsov is still doing all he can. In Chicoutimi’s 8-2 loss on Saturday night, Rubtsov tallied both goals for his 2nd and 3rd on the season, and his 10th and 11th points on the year.
The first one was a thing of beauty. His team was only down 2-0 at the time, and Rubtsov’s goal got them back into it early in the 2nd period. Rubtsov stickhandled at the top of the circle and fired a wrist shot through the legs of a defender and past the netminder for a goal.
He did a little bit more work on his 2nd of the night. He entered the zone and took a hit to get the puck in deep, then got to the slot. He received a pass from a teammate and wired a shot past the goalie for another goal.
Rubtsov was held off the scoresheet on Sunday, but is still back up to a point per game pace on the season.
Through 11 games he has three goals and eight assists for 11 points. This is after totaling 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) in 16 games last season after coming over from Russia and before his season ended due to an injury.
Rubtsov is one of the prospects that could make an impact with the Phantoms next season and battle for a roster spot as soon as 2018.
