The Brandon Manning era is over.
“My conversations with most of those guys were the plan right now is not to bring you back,” Hextall said. “Things can change because we don’t know what happens over the summer.”
“[Filppula] is the one guys where we have interest, so we’re going to see what happens here. The other guys, unless something changes, we don’t plan on bringing them back right now,” he continued.
It was assumed that Manning would not be back and it has now been confirmed. That will open up a spot on the blue line to give a young defenseman a permanent role in the lineup. Travis Sanheim and Robert Hägg should both be a part of the defense corps, and there is a chance for Sam Morin or even Philippe Myers to win a job.
Manning played 207 games over the course of seven seasons with the Flyers. He played 65 games in each of the last two seasons.
Filppula’s status will likely hinge on a few things. If the Flyers think a young center is ready to take that next step, he won’t be back. Furthermore, if the Flyers think that they can get a better center in free agency on a friendly contract, he likely won’t be back. If he is re-signed it should be on a short-term contract with a team-friendly cap hit.
It is not a surprise that the Flyers will not be re-signing Read and Oduya. Read spent most of the season in the AHL and has lost a step, while Oduya was claimed on waivers as a depth defenseman.
The Flyers will have plenty of cap space to work with this offseason, which should be an important one for Hextall and company.
