It was only a matter of time.
The Philadelphia Flyers have loaned defenseman Sam Morin to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in order to activate Andrew MacDonald from injured reserve. MacDonald will return to the lineup tonight in Pittsburgh.
Yesterday’s news of the Flyers going with a veteran-heavy lineup was a precursor to this, and this gives the Flyers just two rookie defensemen in their lineup. Morin is arguably better than Brandon Manning at this time, but experience has some value, and allowing Morin to play 20+ minutes in the AHL could help him in the long run.
MacDonald will return to the lineup alongside Ivan Provorov on the top pair. He is one of three veterans returning to the lineup with younger players taking a seat in the press box.
Morin was a +1 over his two games with the Flyers, averaging 15:49 time on ice per game. He was solid with his reach and long stride at times, but also had some mistakes that cost the Flyers. He will go back to the Phantoms, continue to improve his game, and come up later in the season when necessary.
The Flyers will take on the Penguins in Pittsburgh tonight at 7 p.m. Check out the projected lines, pairings, and what to watch for here.
