Another great depth move by Hexy.
The Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly invited undrafted free agent Ivan Kosorenov to rookie camp in September. Bill Meltzer is one of the best in the business and reported the news early Tuesday morning.
Flyers general manager Ron Hextall confirmed that the team has invited undrafted Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL) right winger Ivan Kosorenkov to attend rookie camp in September along with the organization’s drafted prospects.
Kosorenkov made it through all seven rounds of the NHL Entry Draft without getting selected for the second consecutive year. This year, the 19-year-old right winger was projected to be a middle-round selection and many were surprised that a team didn’t at least take a flyer on him in the seventh round.
The Flyers didn’t wait long to reach out to Kosorenkov, a player they have scouted along with their continued eyes on Laberge, and invited him to last week’s Development Camp. The flashy forward impressed just about everyone in attendance with his sharpshooting abilities on both the forehand and backhand and may have earned himself a training camp invite with his performance.
Kosorenkov fell through the draft, but it’s hard to argue with his stats last year with Victoriaville. The QMJHL is a notoriously high-scoring league, but the kid has the tools to score anywhere. The Russian’s 34 goals were second among rookies to only top pick Nico Hischier, and he finished with 63 points in 68 games.
This is another step towards an NHL contract for Kosorenkov as the Flyers have been known to give contracts to players like him. Philippe Myers didn’t attend development camp with the Flyers in 2015, but a rookie camp invite led to a contract and now he is one of the Flyers’ best prospects.
Kosorenkov is yet another forward prospect to keep an eye on in rookie camp, and he should be able to earn himself a contract with the Flyers. They are four under the limit of 50 after signing their restricted free agents and Nolan Patrick to his entry-level contract, so Kosorenkov should be able to grab one of those slots.
