Coming into the offseason, the Philadelphia Flyers had a few issues to deal with. The most glaring would deciding on which players they would protect and who would possibly be selected by the Vegas Golden Knights.
Part of that decision became easier on Friday evening as general manager Ron Hextall sent forward Nick Cousins and NCAA goaltending prospect Merrick Madsen to the Arizona Coyotes for Brendan Warren and a 2018 5th-round pick.
Cousins was one of the many players who would be fighting for a bottom-six role by the time training camp rolled around. But with the NHL’s deadline for protecting players from the expansion draft set for Saturday evening, teams are trying to fill up spots. That’s when Hextall saw an opportunity to get value out of a player who would be a healthy scratch or possibly taken in the draft by Vegas.
The hosts of SOP Radio – David Cattai, Tom Foti, and Ryan Gilbert – sat down to discuss this topic along with how the trade could impact the Flyers, not only in the near future, but down the road as the team continues to get deeper.
Other topics include:
- Expansion Draft ramifications
- Possible trade opportunities
- Reactions to Montreal Canadiens acquiring Jonathan Drouin from the Tampa Bay Lightning
- Which Flyer could realistically be taken by Vegas
and much more!
