We’re still a month away from hockey in North America, but they’re beginning to get underway across the pond.
The Philadelphia Flyers have a handful of prospects playing overseas, including David Bernhardt and Felix Sandstrom in the SHL. Today their teams faced off in a friendly match prior to the SHL season that begins next month.
Bernhardt’s Djurgardens IF (DIF) came away victorious with a 3-1 victory over Sandstrom’s Brynas IF. Bernhardt even scored a goal against his fellow Flyers prospect.
Brynas took an early 1-0 lead, but David Bernhardt struck back later in the first period.
He got the puck at the point then wristed a shot on net. Felix Sandstrom was screened, and it looks like the puck bounced off a defenseman in front then into the back of the net.
Sandstrom never stood a chance.
He got beat twice more in the game, but he didn’t have too much of a chance on either goal.
On the second goal of the game he got beat on an end-to-end rush turned into a one-timer goal.
Then a DIF forward weaved around the defense and set up a man in the slot for a goal. It looks like Sandstrom nearly got a piece of it despite it being a quick shot from the slot.
Bernhardt was also on the ice for this goal, giving him a +2 for the game.
He split time between the SuperElit and SHL last season, but it looks like he’s destined to be a full-time SHLer this year. You can read more on Bernhardt here.
Sandstrom stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced in the loss. He was the backup last season but returned to Sweden for a chance to be the starter while working with his favorite goalie coach. You can read more on Sandstrom’s outlook here.
It’s going to be an exciting in Philadelphia with the young guns coming up, but don’t forget about the prospects in the CHL and in Europe.
