The World Junior Summer Showcase gets underway today at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan as four teams hold their development camp in preparation for the 2018 IIHF World Championship that begins in late December. USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland will battle over the next week in preparation for the tournament later this year.
Goaltender Carter Hart (Canada) and defenseman Linus Högberg (Sweden) will be the only two Philadelphia Flyers prospects competing in the event, with Högberg attempting to make the final roster for World Juniors for the first time.
Hart has a more mature international pedigree as he helped lead Canada to a silver medal at the World Junior Championship earlier this year. After a rocky and somewhat controversial showing, Hart still remains on his throne as Team Canada’s top goaltender and he’s looking to keep it that way.
The Flyers’ 18-year-old prospect finished 3-1 with a 2.38 goals against average and .906 save percentage in his first experience at World Juniors, and Canada head coach Dominique Ducharme is happy to have Hart back between the pipes again for round two.
“A guy that went through it once that knows what to expect is something that can only be positive,” Ducharme said via NHL.com. “It’s a short tournament with a lot of intensity and games on the line all the time. To be able to have a guy that comes back like that is for sure a big plus.”
Hart allowed a couple of weak goals and had his entire nation on the ropes but bounced back strong to lead Canada to silver. He made 31 saves in the Gold Medal Game against Team USA and stopped four out of the five shooters he faced in the shootout, though it wasn’t enough. USA won the shootout and the gold medal with a 5-4 victory.
Here’s the full schedule for the Summer Showcase, which begins today at 1pm. Hart will be on Canada White.
All games through Tuesday can be seen on HockeyTV, with the final six being broadcast on NHL Network.
