Stolarz was injured early in Wednesday night’s game in Wilkes-Barre against the Penguins. He appeared to injure his left leg as he maneuvered in the crease.
Stolarz left the game without putting any weight on his left leg. Here’s the full sequence.
With Stolarz out, the bulk of the goaltending in the playoffs will now go to Alex Lyon. Lyon actually played in quite a few more games (74) for the Phantoms than Stolarz (29) due to Stolie’s time in the NHL. Lyon is 27-14-0 with four shutouts on the season while carrying a .912 save percentage and 2.74 goals against average.
Martin Ouellette was called up to be the backup netminder last night, and he stopped all 18 shots he faced in relief of Lyon for the win. He will likely be sent back down to Reading with the news breaking out of Everett today that prospect Carter Hart will reportedly join the Phantoms this weekend.
The Phantoms will finish out their season in what will be a meaningless game for them against the Binghamton Senators. They have clinched the second seed and will have home-ice advantage in the first round. They will play the winner of the Hershey Bears vs. Providence Bruins. Both teams would provide a rivalry matchup in the first round and the Phantoms have a winning record against both squads this season.
The Phantoms will host either Hershey or Providence in game one and two of the first round next weekend. Game one is slated for Friday the 21st, and game two for Saturday the 22nd. Times are to be determined.
