The Flyers got a defenseman.
The Philadelphia Flyers have selected defenseman Adam Ginning with their second round pick (50th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft. After getting a pair of forwards in the first round by drafting the best player available, Ron Hextall made sure to get a defenseman in the second round.
Linkoping HC (SHL)
Born: January 13, 2000
Weight: 205 lbs
Ginning is a tall, shutdown defenseman that has experience playing professional hockey as a teenager in Sweden. He split time between the SuperElit and SHL over the past two seasons. He was also the captain of Sweden’s 2018 U18 team. He had four points and a +7 rating in seven games at the U18 World Junior Championships.
He played the majority of the 2016-17 season in the SuperElit with 29 games, while playing in 12 SHL games. This past season that was the opposite, playing in 17 SuperElit games and 28 SHL games.
Here’s a scouting report on Ginning from Elite Prospects.
Big defenseman who plays with a lot of authority. Very good along the boards and in front of the net. Plays physical and has potential to become a solid shutdown defenseman. Moves pretty well and has fine leadership qualities. Has some offensive upside and a good first pass.
And from Steve Kournianos:
Physical defenseman with a penchant for delivering big hits at the right times. People can talk all they want about how physicality and thuggery are dying aspects of today’s finesse-friendly game, but you still need at least one defender with a bit of snarl to balance out a lineup that may be full of puck-skilled types. Ginning’s mobility is average, but he knows how to handle a forecheck by changing speeds, pivoting away from pesky forwards and spotting a cutting teammate. Ginning is the perfect option to play on the top pairing or anchor a penalty-killing unit, and both his wrist and slap shots are hard enough where you might consider him for a second power-play pairing. Ginning simply is tough to play against, but improving his creativity and vision could make him one of the most feared defenders to come out of the 2018 draft.
It might not be a flashy pick, or the high-upside guy you want to take a flier on, but Ginning projects as a solid middle-pair defenseman with the possibility of improving his offensive game to become a strong two-way defenseman.
The Flyers have six more picks later today.
